Activities

CREATIVE AND RELEVANT WELLNESS ACTIVITIES

Pastoral Healthcare Network provides a range of activities designed to promote and enhance wellness within a pastorally caring environment. These activities include practical hands-on workshops, discussion times, fellowship, prayer, information sharing and health assessments, depending on the needs and priorities of our clients. We aim to respond to client circumstances on an individual basis where possible.

HEALTH PROMOTION INFORMATION SESSIONS

Our resident nurses run wellness forums to engage and educate the wider community in relevant subjects.

Through our links across our network, we regularly access experienced health practitioners as guest speakers to deliver current and meaningful information at our health promotion sessions.

CONSULTATIONS AND HEALTH ASSESSMENTS

These appointments generally take place on an individual needs basis and are conducted by our resident and volunteer nursing staff. Blood pressure clinics are regularly offered at group events. Free health consultations are included in this service if requested.

EDUCATION IN SPIRITUAL CARE FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Online Pastoral Nursing course ……..The APNRC in collaboration with a team of International Parish Nurse educators offer a fully online course. The course runs over 10 weeks using the International Parish Nurse Resource centre curriculum – ‘Foundations in Faith Community Nursing’ and contains individual country specific resources.

SUPPORT AND COMFORT

We aim to envelop each person we encounter with love, respect and compassion. It is important to give each individual a strong sense of their innate value as they travel their own unique path with all its twists and turns.

The making and giving of Healing Hearts and Shawls is a major focus of our PHNA ministry and is a practical expression of our comfort and solace for those in times of sorrow.

The Grief Notes Program further extends our care for those dealing with  bereavement. These notes are sent at regular intervals to those suffering the loss of a loved one and assist in understanding the stages of the grieving process.

We invite all members of the community to take part in the programs and fellowship we offer. This involvement often helps in the healing process during a period of difficulty. We endeavour to make all of our activities as accessible as possible, particularly in regard to cost.

ADVOCACY AND REFERRAL

For those in need we offer support personnel to help in completing forms, making phone calls, sending emails or attending appointments. We are able to assist clients in accessing further help from appropriate agencies when required.

FIVE WISHES PROGRAM

This is a planning and documentation tool for spiritual, religious, emotional and cultural needs for reference in the event of serious illness or accident. Our PHNA team provides information and support when clients are reflecting on their priorities and working through this process.

CARING FOR CARERS PROGRAM

Pamper Days are held every two months, hosted at Geelong Natural Therapies, Shannon Ave. They are aimed at supporting Carers and anyone else who feels they have a need in this area. Treatments (and treats!) include hand, foot and head massage, Bowen Therapy, Myotherapy, Mindfulness Meditation, and afternoon tea.

PRAYER SHAWL MAKING

Mindful Knitting takes place each week(?) with a group gathering to share stories, empathy and to listen with open hearts whilst creating Healing Shawls. Each shawl is lovingly dedicated to its unknown recipient.

DIGITAL LITERACY

We have been blessed with a grant from the Griffin Bequest to purchase a bank of iPads for the purpose of teaching adults who are technologically challenged. This will work to help alleviate loneliness, as well as improving confidence in the use of technology in a range of areas including communication, online banking, language skills , social networking and basic technological terminology.

SIGN CHI DO

PHNA offers a weekly class of SIgn Chi Do which is a form of relaxing, movement meditation based on sign language. It is designed to gently stimulate specific areas of the brain and to exercise the body. It was developed in the late 1990s by Dr Anne Borik, a medical practitioner from Arizona, to help rehabilitate her grandmother who had suffered a stroke. Sign Chi Do provides a practice similar to Yoga and Tai Chi for those who wish to incorporate prayer into a slow, reflective exercise of this nature.
